The name MARATUS refers to a genus of spider in the Salticidae Family.
Maratus neptunus was first discovered on a site near Patterson NSW in 2013. It took a further 12 months to rediscover allowing its scientific description and naming.
I had the pleasure of naming the spider M. neptunus. Neptunus ,referring to the trident the male displays on his abdomen during courtship dispays. The name also reflects the blue colouring’.
Normally black, a variant displaying a red trident was discovered a year or so later.
